Say the name….Feel the Power….OCEFIC POTION……..

Let me guess…your probably wondering what the fuck is an Ocefic Potion?

Well... Sit back and listen to a tragic tale of a band the should have ruled the world….had it not been for one small detail that sent them into a tailspin of darkness and despair…something that is not uncommon of many bands of yesterday and today…

NO…not out of control drug use…no one shooting heroin into their eyeballs or anything like that….not even the o so common “Musical Differences”…the only thing that held this band back was……….

LACK OF MUSICAL TALENT AND ABILITY!!!!

Other than that, they had everything needed to make it in Rock & Roll…and come to think of it…why should that have stopped them? ….

Good question….But fear not….because just as the Phoenix rises from the ashes so it will soon be that the Potion will be in motion once again.

Step back in time circa 1988….Hair and studded wrist bands ruled the streets and airwaves. And out of the gutter with guitar in hand steps “Hollywood” Jimmy Steele… Having played guitar now for nearly six whole months, he was ready to ROCK and Rock Hard…

Knowing all of three Motley Crue riffs and the lead to Detroit Rock City, what else was there to know….Time to find a band and start the climb to the top.

He found a drummer and singer from an add he placed in a local music store. The drummer, J.P. Foster had traded a stereo for a cool drum set with heads covered in duck tape, giving it that full, thick cardboard box sound that so many strive to get but fail in the process. J.P. knew the secret.

The singer, John Gowan was a Robert Plant sound-alike except for his range was a few octaves less and he struggled occasionally to find the key the song was in.

After a month or so of intense rehearsing….Playing Poison’s “Talk Dirty to Me” about three hundred times and tripping over themselves with those crazy breaks in Motley’s “Livewire”, they decided it was time to find a bass player.

Anyone in a band knows how hard it is to find a bass player. Not a good one, just A bass player. So, there was one guy that J.P. and John went to school with that rumor had it, played bass. Well…after some intense negotiations, and agreeing to sneak him a beer into practice he agreed to jam. His name was Dave and now they Rocked!

Now was the time to put it all together…. First priority was a cool Metal name. You can’t go anywhere if you band name sucks. So, with Steele’s brain working overtime, he sat in Metal shop class (fitting place for this) and started writing down names and seeing which one would make the coolest logo. A few days later…..’Presto’….he had the perfect name…..

Once he showed it to the other guys, it was a unanimous decision. The as of yet un-named Metal machine was now…..you guessed it…

OCEFIC POTION….

(the world would never catch on that it was actually Steele’s play on words twist of the Clothing company Ocean Pacific).

Things were really clicking now…Next step was to come up with a fitting Rock & Roll stage name for everybody. Since you can’t get much cooler than “Hollywood” Jimmy Stelle, he obviously kept that name…But as far as the other guys…changes needed to be made….So….back to the brainstorming….Well, with John being the front guy…the obvious choice for him was Johnny Ocefic…they all agreed….and for J.P…..well…the best they could really do for him was just to reverse the letters in his last name of Foster to Retsof. J.P. Retsof it was….and as far as Dave went…Thy really didn’t know much about Dave so they just referred to him as… you guessed it…”Dave”

Next up on the agenda…A cool cover for the debut album… Stelle was friends with a Mexican guy named Joe in his metal shop class who was a good artist. Stelle gave him his vision….something Dark and Evil…something Metal…he let Joe do the rest and lo and behold, a masterpiece nothing short of Spinal Taps infamous Smell the Glove album art was born.

Now for the songs…Stelle was the force to be reckoned with when it came to lyrics. He sat in class (Metal shop of course) and penned several classics such as ‘Strong Closet’, ‘Drug Runner’ and ‘Crazy Eddie’ among others.

But alas, now the problems started creeping in. As soon as the band started rehearsing these tunes, they quickly realized that one thing was terribly wrong…The songs were much to complex and difficult. Steele’s vision was light years beyond the bands actual ability. What Steele was hearing in his head was a cross between Yngwie / Racer X shredding on the guitar and the powerful galloping rhythms of Maiden and Priest. At this point the band hadn’t even made it thru “Shout at the Devil” one whole time without crashing and burning.

Obviously this caused major strife within the group. On top of this, the police were being called out every time they started playing at J.P.’s girlfriends parents garage. Nerves were frayed and tempers were flaring and the unthinkable finally occurred. In late 1988, just months after the inception of what could have been the Worlds greatest Metal band, it was over…..

Fast forward nearly fifteen years later and nothing is known about three of the members of the nearly famous Potion but the one member who has never let the flame die is you guessed it…the lone and founding member, “Hollywood” Jimmy Steele. Steele is currently in the witness protection program and is living under the name Jimmy Adcock and playing with a band called RadioKing, waiting for the right time to spring the Power of the Potion to the masses.
